Position Summary:

Florida Atlantic University’s Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, located in Fort Pierce, Florida, seeks candidates for an Assistant, Associate, or Full Research Professor with expertise in Bioinformatics and Synthetic Biology to work in our Marine Biomedical Research Program. Responsibilities include developing a platform for the identification and translation of biosynthetic gene clusters into chemicals useful in human health or other applications from marine organisms. Expertise in genome assembly from metagenomic data is highly desirable to facilitate development of marine organism derived natural products; environmental samples related to harmful algal blooms or other adverse events related to oceans and human health, aquaculture, and ecological investigations. Applicants whose research includes a strong background in developing methods and software for the screening, editing, storing, and analyzing of data, with an emphasis on DNA, RNA, and protein sequence data are desired. Experience with whole genome assembly, metagenomic analysis, genomic profiling, comparative genomics, and gene mapping is preferred. The candidate will have the opportunity to teach graduate and undergraduate courses related to Marine Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Evolutionary Biology, or Genomics. Applications are sought from individuals with excellent research/publication records and demonstrated potential to lead a strong, extramurally funded research program. The successful candidate should have strong academic and research connections and be poised to take advantage of opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations at FAU-HBOI.  

Candidates should be willing to work with a team of other scientists and engineers in a university culture that fosters innovation and collaboration within our institute, with colleagues at FAU, and with local, national, and international partners. Candidates are expected to develop new understanding and strategies, technologies, or products that will lead to stewardship and wise use of the oceans. This position includes a start-up package, a lab, and office space. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

The successful candidate must possess an earned doctorate in Microbiology, Synthetic Biology, Chemistry, Metabolic Engineering, Bioinformatics, Functional Genomics, or a closely related discipline at the time of application.

Preferred experience includes:

(1) a strong publication record, (2) a well-funded, active research program commensurate with their level of experience, (3) skills in leadership and mentoring, and (4) the ability to work cooperatively with University and extramural partners on research that addresses contemporary and emerging issues in ocean science.

The selected candidate for this position is required to submit an official transcript sent directly from the institution for the Provost’s credential file prior to the first day of employment. Similarly, for degrees from outside the United States, the evaluation by an organization belonging to the National Association of Credential Evaluation (NACES), with an indication of the documents the evaluation was prepared from (official transcripts, diplomas, dissertation abstracts) is required for the Provost’s credential file prior to the first day of employment.
